So this collaboration is set to be released on Nov. 1. The roots of the project were planted when Metallica played with Lou at the 25th anniversary of the Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame concerts back in 2009. They had a few jam sessions, but nothing was ever set in stone. Until this past February. It was then that Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said that the band was working on a project with some new music, but it "was not a new Metallica record". As time passed, it was revealed that this project was in fact not a new Metallica record, as Ulrich had stated, but was actually a collaboration with Reed, the principle songwriter, and lead vocalist and guitarist for The Velvet Underground, a band formed in the 60's. He also has had an extensive solo career as well. Well, here we are, into the end of October, and the details of the project have fully been revealed. The album is called Lulu, and at first, was intended to be Metallica re-recording some of Reed's older material that he recorded. Among these were songs composed for the play also called Lulu, written by German playwright Frank Wedekind.
Early reviews of the album have been generally negative. I, however, have listened to the album myself, and I like it. I won't sit here and say I'm a lifelong Lou Reed fan, but I do like his work. I won't give him any Best Vocalist awards, but there are FAR WORSE singers out there. And my thoughts on Metallica need no explanation. Love them. So combining the two makes sense to me.
As mentioned above, the album - a 2 disc set - is slated for a Nov. 1 release. You have to go into this with an open mind if you choose to listen to it. The mindset that this was a new project for the parties involved, and in no way represents any sound that they would do on a new album of their own.
